Half- term break as a trainee….

Is there such a thing? It’s a question I have been asking myself since I started training last September. Last Friday night after a long day on University Zoom training, following a week of remote teaching and key worker supervision, I starting to stress over what I had to get done over half term and it felt overwhelming. I was like a rabbit in headlights.

Overwhelming and tired……I knew I needed to do something or I was going to burst, probably with tears of exhausting if honest. I got myself together after my usual remedies. I always resort to my key stabilisers, a cup of tea, a biscuit, and a pen and paper. Putting everything down on a word-map and getting a hold of myself. From there, I used the map to write up my list, breaking it down into three sections- priorities, important and if possible.

Everyone has different versions of these grids, such as the important/urgent matrix. Use what works for you but use something that brings focus and direction. Once written, I was able to go to bed feeling less hassled and more at ease. No doubting that I had plenty to get done over the week, but I felt in control. For me that’s half the battle, if I have structure over a situation it brings calm and direction. Off I went to bed feeling a little better and not as overwhelmed.

Although it brings a bigger question, what break do trainees (or NQT’s and teachers) get during holidays?

As a trainee completing my QTS and PGCE, it can be overwhelming there is always something that is outstanding. Whether it be Uni assignments, lesson planning, improving your subject competence, up skilling on technology and platforms or reading around your pedagogy – it’s never ending. Tonight, I asked my Twitter community what they were up to this week. I was delighted to see that over 60% of those polled were hoping to take a rest, followed by preparing resources and reading. It shows we are starting to focus and prioritise our wellbeing and mental health too. Maybe we are starting to listen to ourselves at last.

I’m determined to stop and reflect if I’m following my own advice and do likewise. I’m a busy mum, a trainee teacher and community volunteer. I’ve my hand in too many pies and at times I need to stop. With that in mind, I’m about to sit down and watch a Harry Potter film with my son and enjoy it without feeling guilty. Aa you can guess that doesn’t come easy but something I’m working on.

It’s what holidays are about, look after yourself and your family too. The list will continue to grow but your health needs nurturing. Have a fabulous half term everyone, rest and enjoy.
