I am a career changer with over 20 years working across many roles in leadership. I was nervous about taking the giant leap into the retail sector but after a turbulent year during Covid-19, I knew I needed to change my future. It may sound cliché but I wanted to make a real difference, I needed a new challenge. Education is certainly that challenge, no day has been the same, I have had lots of ups and downs but every day I feel I make a difference to someone.
My background has certainly guided me on the journey. We talk about the right behaviours within education and expect an awful lot from teachers on a daily basis. I’m eager for my previous career to have an influence on how I operate. I’m conscious of the importance of building positive relationships from the outset, being collaborative, challenging, approachable and most importantly calm and consistent. I can’t emphasis this enough, don’t add stress to a situation that is already a little tetchy. Our role is to calm it all down and stabilise the emotion or activity.
I’ll blog more about my background over time and how it has helped me but I wanted to end with a comment someone said to me about teacher ‘We all remember the teacher we can go to with anything, he kept me on my toes but I knew he was always there if I needed him’.
I hope some day someone will say that about me.
